Hey Facebook Fix your System!
Today I got myself banned on Facebook for 24 hours.
The reason was that Facebook’s algorithm thought I was posting pornographic pictures. In my defense any human being can quickly see that this is not porn. It is a slide of NASA Astronauts in Skylab. It was part of a talk that I was attending.
This is what I posted that got me banned from Facebook:
Hmm… I didn’t realize it until now that the FB community considered the picture of NASA astronauts as nudes!! I was offered a chance to dispute this. I did dispute it. I wanted it to know that a human being disputed the machine. (Rage against the machine). By sending the dispute, I had hope to send a signal to the algorithm that it needed to recalibrate.
So I chose that option to let FB know that its algorithm is way off. However, “due to the covid pandemic”, there wasn’t going to be enough reviewers to get to my case and remove the lock.
I find that now, I can’t post any comment of any kind as I may have triggered some rules for posting the pictures of these astronauts! The system is broken. And it is frustrating. It can’t learn from its mistakes too.
I think it is unfair that such a blatant error would get me blocked for 24 hours. Meanwhile the same Facebook Algorithm allowed this to be posted:
And there seems to be no other recourse but to wait it out. OMG.
